Jessica Shaw was a 4-year starter on the Rockwall High School varsity volleyball team from 2000-2004 where she earned numerous awards and honors, including 2nd Team All District 9-5A in 2002 and 2003, RHS Most Valuable Player 2003, Leadership award 2002 and 2003, and Freshman of the Year 2000. Even though she earned several awards for her volleyball skills, what she is remembered most for though, is her legacy of kindness.
Jessica was the epitome of a servant-leader and went out of her way to care for and encourage her teammates. She was the team mom, always looking after the underclassman. Jessica also coached the Club MVP volleyball team, along with several teams at the Rockwall YMCA. She came to have as much passion for coaching volleyball as she did playing it, and she loved playing big sister to all of her players.
Jessica graduated from Rockwall High School in 2004 and was enrolled to begin classes at the University of North Texas. The day before classes were to begin, Jessica was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Jessica's jersey number for all four years on the volleyball team was "10", and because she was the perfect "10" with her leadership, attitude, and work ethic, Rockwall High School retired her jersey. Ever since then, Rockwall High School’s volleyball program hosts a memorial tournament in her honor, which has become known as the JFS Tournament. It also presents an annual “Jessica Shaw Award and Scholarship for Leadership, Friendship and Loyalty” at the end of each season. This award is presented to a senior player who most embodies the qualities by which Jessica is remembered. The recipient is determined by a team vote.
Jessica’s father, Michael Shaw, was very involved with the JFS Tournament. He would not only attend but would also help sponsor the JFS Tournament each year. It brought him a lot of joy to be able to support the program and watch athletes compete for a good cause. He also would present the JFS scholarship at the RHS awards ceremony to the recipient of the scholarship. Unfortunately, in October of 2016, Michael Shaw passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Even with his passing though, the volleyball program has continued to honor both Jessica and Michael Shaw’s legacy through the tradition of the JFS Memorial Tournament, which just completed its 15th year!
